How do I register my child(ren)?

Can we arrive at the Blast anytime between 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM, or do we need to arrive at 11:00 AM?
There are no set appointments. The Back to School Blast is first come first serve, however, please arrive as close to 11:00 AM as possible to complete the mandatory health screenings and have enough time to enjoy the fun events planned throughout the day.
Where can I park when I arrive at the church for the Back to School Blast?
Parking will be available in the main Garfield parking lot, which is accessible via the two church driveways off of Lander Road. When you arrive, members of our Parking Lot Team will greet and direct you. There is additional parking in the Huntington Bank parking lot at 3637 Lander Road. It is located across the street from the church. Look for Back to School Blast signs.
Is the Back to School Blast located on any bus routes?
Information about bus routes and a full system map are available on the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) website. The Back to School Blast is located at the Garfield Memorial Church Pepper Pike Campus: 3650 Lander Road, Pepper Pike, Ohio 44124, a short distance from Lander Circle. Do my children need to go to all the health screenings (physical, vision, dental, hearing) at the Back to School Blast?
Every child registered must complete the hearing, vision and dental screenings. The physical screening is optional but recommended for children entering kindergarten or students who will be playing sports. The screenings will also help you to know if your children would benefit from follow-up care; if the healthcare team recommends further screenings, or if treatment is required, referrals will be provided so that you may seek medical attention independent of the Blast. Once your children have received their screenings, they are welcome to celebrate by visiting the book fair for free books, the salon for free haircuts and styling, and our “Hero Zone” area for free entertainment, food, and fun!
Is the new online pre-participation physical evaluation required for high school sports physicals, or can they use the paper form used in previous years?
The new online form is a requirement. Simply visit ohsaa.org/medicine/physicalform.htm, click the link to find your school, complete the form, and print. Please bring that copy to the Back to School Blast on July 29th. If you are not able to complete and print the online form, computer kiosks will be available at your physical.
Is there a charge for the physical? What if my children are enrolled in a Medicaid plan, or are not covered by health insurance at all?
You will not be charged for services received at the Back to School Blast. The Blast is a free event for children grades K – 12 who are enrolled in Medicaid (plans such as the Buckeye Health Plan, CareSource, Molina HealthCare of Ohio, Inc., Paramount Advantage, or United Healthcare Community Plan of Ohio), or who don’t have health insurance at all. The health screenings, backpacks, school supplies, haircuts, books, food, and entertainment are free to all registered guests.
How do I sign up to volunteer at the Back to School Blast?
You can sign up online to be a volunteer at www.garfieldschoolblast.com. Click the Volunteer tab at the top right area of the home screen.
Please visit our Volunteer page to read more about volunteering and to sign up. Due to the scope of the Back to School Blast, volunteers must be 16 years or older.
Do I have to attend every meeting?
We know time is precious and schedules are busy! Back to School Blast meetings are meant to provide important information, get you connected with your team, and help ensure the efficiency and smooth functioning of all event stations on July 29. We recommend attending meetings as you are able, and encourage you to stay in contact with your team lead should you be unable to attend any Blast gatherings. Do I have to stay for the entire event?
The Back to School Blast is staffed by volunteers and counts on the time commitment of people who have signed up to serve. If you are unable to work from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM on July 29, or are unable to attend the setup and/or cleanup portion of the event, please let your team lead know so that he or she can make sure your team station is staffed fully on event day. If you have signed up but circumstances arise that prevent you from volunteering, please contact your team lead as soon as possible, even if it is the morning of July 29.
Where should I park the morning of the event?
Please park in the Garfield overflow parking lot (also called the upper lot), which is accessible via Chagrin Blvd. The entrance is Key Private Bank 30100 Chagrin Blvd. This will ensure ample parking for our guests in the main lot.
Is childcare provided for my children while I volunteer at the event?
Due to limited space and resources, childcare for children of volunteers is not provided at the event. If you have children 16 years or older, we encourage them to sign up to serve along with you!
What is a partner and caregiver resource?
A partner is any organization that provide services, such as health screenings, haircuts, and entertainment, the day of the event. A caregiver resource is also a partner that sends a representatives to share information about programs that support the health, care, and growth of children, parents, and caregivers. Caregiver resources typically set up vendor tables throughout the church lobby.
